Go Team Paxton!

Phew! Paxton made it through surgery, out of the OR, and up to the PICU. Susanne got the page at 10:15 am to let her know that he did well and was currently being transported to the PICU to get set up in his new crib. In the meantime, the surgeon came to talk to Susanne and Scott to discuss how everything went. He informed them that Paxton did well under anesthesia and the procedure was successful. The surgeon placed the BT shunt and the PDA (patent ductus arteriosis) was closed off.
Susanne and Scott decided that saying goodbye to Paxton this morning before his surgery was one of the hardest things they have ever had to do. The waiting and watching of the clock was painful. They tried to pass the time by playing Scrabble Scramble. Even though this helped to distract them for a little while, they both quickly realized how anxious and nervous they both really were. When they heard that he had come out of surgery, they felt an almost instant sense of relief.
Scott and Susanne waited for about two hours before they were allowed to go back to visit with Paxton post-op. The doctors and nurses did a great job of updating them on his current status and explained everything that he was hooked up to. His incision was bigger than they both had expected. Paxton was still out of it from all of the anesthesia and pain medications. The doctors informed Susanne and Scott that it may take up to six hours for the anesthesia to completely wear off. They plan on sitting with him until he wakes up.

You all have been in my thoughts and prayers - or Kellie would have kicked my butt ;-). No, she knows I'm a sucker for any baby but especially NICU/PICU babes. May the next few days be uneventful and he recover. Paxton has the cutest nose!

Don't be upset but he might swell a bit and it is hard for anyone to recover from surgery but babies are amazing creatures!

Sending thoughts and prayers,
Elizabeth

I left a message last night right after Leah and Wally's, but it obviously did not go through. I felt a genuine peace whenever I thought of you and Paxton yesterday, but it was still wonderful to read the good news in the blog. Love and prayers to all!
