Day 1

Scott and Susanne had a difficult time getting a good night's rest knowing that their baby was in the NICU at a different hospital. They called frequently throughout the night to get updates on Paxton's status to try to calm their nerves. Susanne was supposed to stay at the hospital for two nights before being discharged, but they requested that she be released a day early so they could see Paxton as soon as possible. Luckily, the doctor approved their request.
Scott and Susanne finally arrived at the NICU at Inova Fairfax Hospital late that night. They were shocked to see all of the tubes and wires that Paxton was connected to. The nurses informed them that he had been stable throughout the day and that he was resting comfortably. Even though Susanne couldn't hold her sweet baby boy, she did get to change his diaper for the first time. For those of you who have never experienced newborn poop, it's the stickiest substance on the planet. Stupid meconium!
Scott and Susanne both agreed that the most difficult part of their entire day was going home at the end of the night without a baby. It was very hard to look in Paxton's nursery and see an empty crib.
